The Mountain Heritage Center
The School Circle District is being developed into a cultural arts center for Yancey County. The District includes the Parkway Playhouse, Yancey County Board of Education, The Burnsville Gym, "Kids Mountain" Playground and the future home of the Yancey County Library (formerly Burnsville Elementary School).
Yancey County, at this time, has one historic site. This was designated, as such, by the North Carolina Department of History and Archives and is comprised of three buildings, which have been listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. The three buildings were a part of the early 1920's Yancey Collegiate Institute (YCI).
Mountain Heritage Center
The Mountain Heritage Center (previously the Brown Dorm for the YCI) is a recent renovation that includes studios for the visual and performing arts. There are 12 studios available for rent at a reasonable rate, which includes all utilities, heating and air conditioning, plus access to wireless internet connections, at no extra cost. The building includes a professional recording studio, as well as a showcase room for displaying local works of art and crafts of Yancey County. One of our many projects is to support local artists, and invest resources to help encourage entrepreneurs to deliver cultural experiences to our tourists. We welcome you to visit the Mountain Heritage Center and to tour the surrounding facilities.
The Mountain Heritage Center is the present home of the Cultural Resource Commission (CRC). Our ultimate goal is to become a self-sustaining entity utilizing the resources of local government, non-profits and private enterprise. We will build on and preserve the history and culture of the community to create jobs and economic investment in Heritage Tourism.
The old gym for the Yancey Collegiate Institute was turned into the Parkway Playhouse in 1945 and has been used continuously since then for that purpose. Plays (of a very professional quality) are presented each year from May until August. The vision of the CRC and the Playhouse is to make this a year round facility for the performing arts.
Be sure to visit the Parkway Playhouse web site for additional information including the current season schedule and ticket information.
This building contained the main classrooms for the Yancey Collegiate Institute (YCI) in the early 20's and later served as an elementary school. The building is presently being renovated to accommodate the Yancey Public Library expansion. This renovation will also accommodate the Kivette-Herring collection of Yancey Art. The collection also comes with a $1,000,000 dollar endowment.
